Harper College – Access and Disability Services
Our mission is to create a comprehensively, accessible environment and to empower students to become actively involved in all aspects of campus life.
Our staff provide specialized support to students in addition to ensuring that students receive reasonable accommodations.  In 2007 – 2008, the ADS office served over 1,000 students with disabilities.  A full time counselor and two part time counselors provide coaching and support to over 100 students with psychological disabilities, including 14 students who have ASD: Autism Spectrum Disorders.  A parent support group for students with ADS was initiated in Fall 2008.  For more information, call ADS at 847-925-6266 or contact mdecanio@harpercollege.edu or swatson@harpercollege.edu for assistance.

Life Skills for Vocational Success
One of the more comprehensive life skills lists I've come across, including social skills units. Not set up for visual learners, this comes from Alabama Dept. of Rehab. Services, but might be worth a look for ideas if your child is a reader.

Neurodiversity Internet Resources
Lots of books and articles listed here which discuss the importance of social skills in the workplace; also strategies for coping and successfully 'navigating' the social world at work.

Social Skills for Middle School Students
Great resource for teachers or parents working with middle and high school students. VERY specific modules great topics like 'Doorway Etiquette'; 'Willingness to Try New Tasks'; and 'Accepting Constructive Criticism'.

REFERENCE POINTS: New Fact Sheets from ODEP

ODEP has just released three new fact sheets in a new and easy to read
format that provide constructive disability employment information for
parents, youth and employers:

"Creating a Path to Employment: Tips for Parents with Children with
Disabilities": Work in the 21st century is more team-based than ever.
Start by exploring the world of work together.
http://www.dol.gov/odep/documents/creating_path_to_Employment.pdf

"Essential Skills to Getting a Job: What Young People with
Disabilities Need to Know": Often referred to as "soft skills", work
ethic, communication, teamwork and critical thinking are all must
have's for youth in today's job market.
http://www.dol.gov/odep/documents/essential_job_skills.pdf

"Shaping Tomorrow's Workforce: Including Talents of Young People with
Disabilities": Youth with disabilities bring fresh, new perspectives
that enrich strategies for meeting business challenges and achieving
success. http://www.dol.gov/odep/documents/shaping_tomorrows_workforce.pdf

REFERENCE POINTS: New Transition Resources

Two new handouts to help parents of transition-age youth are now
available on the PACER Center Web site. The handouts are produced by
Project PRIDE, a parent information and training project funded by the
Rehabilitation Services Administration.

Start Now to Chart Your Youth's Career Path After Graduation
(PHP-c162) ( http://www.pacer.org/publications/transition.asp#handouts
) A high school diploma opens the doors to many exciting, new
opportunities. This handout looks at a variety of options available to
young adults after high school such as employment, postsecondary
training or education and self-employment.

Help Your Young Adult Learn About Accessing Accommodations After High
School (PHP-c165) (
http://www.pacer.org/publications/transition.asp#handouts ) Although
accommodation rights are provided to adults with disabilities through
the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Rehabilitation Act
of 1973, services are not provided automatically. This handout
discusses methods to advocate for accommodations in postsecondary
education and training, employment and for independent living.

These and other PACER Center handouts for parents specifically on the
Americans with Disabilities Act and other transition issues can be
found on the PACER Web site at
http://www.pacer.org/publications/transition.asp#handouts
